The Art of Cold DMs for Web3
Here's the secret trick that got me $5000 in sales & 6 Job Offers at 16 years old.
Hey Guys! 👋
Today’s Newsletter will be about Cold Outreach. It is the perfect way to build connections & find Opportunities instead of waiting for them.
Before we begin, here’s a short introduction about me:
I’m Aaditya, a 16 y/o Entrepreneur & Content Creator in the Web3 Space. I’m currently working on a Ghostwriting Agency, which helps Web3 Founders & Projects grow on Twitter & LinkedIn with Organic Content. I’m also actively creating content to build a personal brand and attract more opportunities. Feel free to connect with me here. 💪
Alright, let’s begin!
What is Cold Outreach?
Simply put, cold outreach is reaching out to someone you don’t know (a stranger). You’ve had no contact with them before & you might not share a connection.
How is Cold Outreach done?
There are various ways you can reach out to strangers, including:
Cold Direct Messages (Twitter/LinkedIn/Telegram/Discord/etc.)
Cold Emails
Cold Calls
Today, let’s focus on written forms of Cold Outreach.
But before that, let’s answer the most important question. (I’m gonna drop some wisdom here) 👇
Why Cold Outreach?
Let me introduce to the concept of the ‘Probability Matrix‘. And yes, I this is something I came up with myself.
Every second of your Life, endless events can occur. You could win a lottery or have an heart attack! And every time something unique happens, you build a chain. But not a simple chain like in Blockchain, but a complex mesh (matrix).
I won’t take up your time with my mind blabber, simply put - The more you expose yourself to opportunities, the more likely you are to get some.
If you’re looking for a Job - it’s better to go to them, then to wait like others do.
If you’re looking to talk to a beautiful girl - it’s better to go to her than to wait for her to come to you. (Won’t always work, I’m not an expert here)
Anyways, bottomline - Outreach matter. Don’t wait in line like losers, go get what you want!
Now’s the main stuff. 👇
The Art of Cold DMs……
Allow me to introduce you to the 4 C’s of Cold DMs:
1. Complete
It is very important to convey a complete idea when reaching out to strangers. Don’t keep the Conversation Hanging, it’s the written equivalent of awkward silence…………..
Here’s a few mistakes to avoid:
Don’t start with just ‘Hi‘ or ‘Yo‘.
Don’t start with just emojis like 👋 or 😀
Don’t start blabbing about what you want immediately.
You need to keep in mind that the reader is probably a busy person, who’s receiving many such Cold DMs everyday.
Don’t expect them to reply to your ‘Hi‘ with a ‘Hey‘. Expect them to delete the chat!
Instead, you should convey a complete message. Your first message should be your last message.
Here’s what it should include:
A short Introduction.
How did you find the person?
What offer or request do you have?
Why should the Reader consider your offer?
A Call-to-Action (What should the reader do after reading your message?)
A Conclusion.
Here’s an example:
2. Concise
Given the liberty of writing a complete message, you shouldn’t write an essay!
The more short & crisp your message is, the more likely will it be read.
The ideal word limit I recommend is 100, try not to exceed that.
One of the most underrated technique, is to use bullet points:
They’re short.
They’re better looking.
They Stand out.
Being concise also ensures that Reader Attention is retained throughout.
3. Clear
Clearly, the most important of them all. You may write clearly, but you need to be heard clearly.
This is the most common mistake people make while reaching out:
‘Not being clear about what they want.’
It is very important to not give mixed messages or be unclear about why you’ve messaged the reader. This Clarity begins in your mind, know what you want or expect from the reader. Write it that way.
→ If you’re selling something, sell.
→ If you need help, ask for help.
The more clear your intent is, the more credibility you have.
Avoid building your way up like a story - ‘How are you?‘ or ‘Do you face this problem?’. All of this works with verbal sales, but in DMs - You get only one shot!
4. Context
Now this is what separates the Pros from the herd. Even if there is no Context for your conversation, you can make one!
The thing is, the reader doesn’t know you. They can’t trust everything you say. This is because you haven’t built a relationship with them.
The perfect way to build an instant connect with them, is to add Context. Relevance. Commonality.
Pros usually do this by referencing to any of the Reader’s recent activity.
Example:
I read your recent post on XYZ
We had a quick chat at the XYZ event
I’ve loved the way you did a particular thing while working at XYZ
People love being pampered. Show them that you care for them. Show them that you’ve done your Homework on their work. They’ll definitely want to listen to you.
Here’s a example:
That’s a wrap on the 4 C’s of Cold DMs. Here’s a few extra things to keep in mind!
Practice more. Send more Cold DMs. You’ll pick it up only by doing it.
Respect other’ privacy & personal space. Don’t spam them unnecessarily.
Build Relationship > Build Conversations.
Talk about Mutual Benefits.
Now that’s a wrap on the Art of Cold DMs.
